At River and Fish, we believe that water engineering should protect life, not endanger it.

Our story

Many of our freshwater fish move up and downstream and between the sea and rivers as part of their lifecycle. Many of the structures built in our rivers and streams impact on this movement either as a barrier or through introducing risks of harm or removal of fish at water intakes.

As water engineers we understand the physical properties of water, the hydraulics. At River and Fish in addition we have developed an understanding of the needs and behaviours of fish around those structures from both western science and an understanding of Mātauranga Māori. In combining expertise in hydraulics with that understanding of how the hydraulics effect fish we are able to bettwer design solutions that provide better outcomes for the fish while still meeting the functions of the infrastructure.

Every project we undertake aims to protect freshwater fish, restore river ecosystems, and ensure that water continues to flow in harmony with the land.
